+ WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COACH AND THERAPIST OR COUNSELLOR?

There is a LOT of confusion regarding the numerous buzzwords that tend to crop up when you’re searching online for a wellbeing specialist. There are lots of similarities between a Coach and a Counsellor but the biggest difference between the two specialisms is actually their core approach:

  • A coach is focused on your potential and is trained to help clients move forward in life. They tend to use action-orientated techniques; setting goals to resolve problems and creating a path to help their clients achieve these goals.

  • A counsellor is focused on helping you be at peace with yourself and your life. They’re trained in human development, sexuality, family dynamics, and mental health conditions and enable you to identify problems and find strategies for coping with them.

Many coaching training programmes are based on psychological theories, so if — like me! — your coach has training in both disciplines, it can provide a deeper grounding and more varied skillset for your needs.

+ ARE YOU THE RIGHT TYPE OF COACH FOR ME?

Although the foundations of their training should be pretty much the same, each coach has a slightly different approach. I have a very humanistic approach; I champion working side by side with you to strengthen your self-belief, wellness, self-care, mindfulness, strategy, positivity & resilience.  If that sounds like something you’d like to work with, I’d love to see you succeed.

+ WHAT MAKES A GOOD COACH?

A good coach is someone who can connect and gel with their clients, they have a unique ability to understand the client’s circumstances and then using a process based on theory, techniques and innate ability works with the client to achieve their personal and professional aspirations.

+ HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

Most of my clients need a maximum of 6 one hour sessions. This would usually be sufficient to dig deep enough into your challenges, set effective goals and monitor progress. Subsequently clients usually revisit and refresh a few months down the line for a top-up session. Sometimes clients have just 1 or 2 sessions with me for a one off situation, for example, preparing for an important presentation or interview with confidence.

+ HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED SESSIONS?

The work does require momentum in order to embed quickly and consistently, so regular sessions, once a week or once every two weeks is recommended for the duration of the sessions.

+ WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME IN SESSIONS?

Your role is to be as open as possible with what is going through your mind within the session. It is a safe space for you to be able to share and explore, it is precious time for you to focus on yourself without distractions. Homework, journaling or reading might be set between sessions, where appropriate, to enhance the process.

+ WHAT WILL I GET FROM COACHING?

For Employers: Coaching and mentoring an employee makes them more valuable to your organisation by developing and enhancing their skills—both professionally and personally. By being interested in the growth of your staff, you're showing them that you care about their progress and this can increase their performance potential and loyalty to you.

For Individuals: Working with a coach actually makes getting what you want easier, saves you time and makes the process more enjoyable because you're learning so much about yourself, people and life along the way. Working with a coach helps you to see possibility. It creates a sense of freedom. It holds and creates a space for your expansion.
